It’s okay. It’s just Back To School.


You're ready.

The date has been in your diary since you briefly checked the calendar in your email late November making sure that you wouldn't forget when you have to go back. Double checking on what day your classes start sometime in early January, and here you are. You have brought your textbooks. You have overstuffed your backpack for the first day, and thanking the technological geniuses from above you have downloaded a lost on campus app for your phone as well as a screenshot of your timetable - just in case.

For many first year students the first week of school can seem like both an exciting process of learning to stand on your own two feet, and a terrifying ordeal of being exceptionally early to class resulting in you being the first person to pick a seat. As a senior student, I promise you that nobody truly cares where you sit but I recommend sitting somewhere near the will help significantly later on when you need that tutor to remember your name.

Second year students often cruise back to school with the assumption that they have everything under control. They have their books lined up, but haven't purchased them incase they won't need them; we all know that money can be better spent on a ticket to the booze cruise later in semester. Then after two weeks of back to school parties, late nights and attendance that can be considered patchy at best (booze cruises don't mix well with compulsory 8am lectures), the stress levels start to increase, and amongst looming deadlines of assignments three weeks away, the killer hangover that resides in your morning routine and the mouldy cheese in your fridge it can all start to feel like a bit much but it will be okay. You simply convince yourself that late night McDonalds will solve all your problems and hiding under the covers watching Netflix is the way to go.

Fear not. Third year students have this back to school routine down to a fine art. They have purchased all of their books before semester starts. They've completed all their unit readings well ahead of time and green juice is the morning starter for all that consider themselves the pinnacle of success. Please note though, that while this one percent of students feel this way most third year students follow the same path as second year students, just with a more intense workload and a greater sense of accomplishment from not waking up with a hangover on a Wednesday morning and having just enough change in the bottom of their bag to purchase a coffee on their way to class.

Back to school can seem daunting, and no matter how much preparation you seem to do it can often feel like you have not done enough. Remember to give yourself a break; go for a walk, read a book or cook your mums favourite pasta recipe. The start of semester is a busy time, and if you are choosing to include yourself in school clubs and teams then your calendar will start to fill up pretty quickly. Remember, preparation is the key to success and sticking to a schedule will definitely help you stay on track with your studies (Read our 5 tips to planning your semester post here). Take care of your body with a healthy diet and regular exercise and while parting may seem like a good idea while the workload is low, I would recommend trying to keep it to 1-2 nights a week for your own success.

Enjoy the start of the school year as it will get more difficult and these memories will encourage you to keep going but most importantly learn to enjoy everyday after the parties end, and the free pens run out. You get to choose what you study and the easiest tip to make it enjoyable; is to study something you are genuinely interested in and passionate about.
